Put your Best Self Forward for a Traineeship or Apprenticeship

A traineeship or apprenticeship is a great way to learn a skill or trade on-the-job.  For every vacancy we have for an apprenticeship or traineeship, we can get up to 200 applicants, so it is important that you put your best self forward and present yourself the best way possible.

As trainee or apprentice, you will a great asset to any business, and an opportunity for you to be trained in a new job.  Many trainees and apprentices in business go on to excel in their career path within that organisation.

The big question is, how can you get someone to take a chance on you when you don’t have any previous work experience?

You will need to stand out and communicate why the employer should take you on.

It is important to demonstrate to the employer:

  • Your ability to learn new skills.
  • Your willingness to listen and follow instructions

Create a great resume.

While we understand you may not have had much or any paid work experience, we know you do have skills!  Think about what you can include such as:

  • Have you completed a pre-apprenticeship or any other courses while at school?
  • Have you worked in a family business on weekends or during holidays?
  • Have you volunteered in any programs?
  • Have you worked part-time?
  • Have you participated in personal development programs?
  • What awards have you received at school?
  • What kind of projects did you complete at school?
  • Do you belong to a sporting club or other group?

Its very important that your resume does not have any spelling or grammar mistakes.  Find a friend or family member who has great admin skills who can lay it out for you to look professional.  There are many online resume templates too that you can use.

Make sure that you present well.

Even if you are applying for a trade, it’s essential to dress professionally and look clean and tidy.  And always be at the interview before the scheduled time.

Show your Enthusiasm

Be enthusiastic.  Once you’ve captured the attention of a potential employer, now it’s time to convince them to take you on. Remember, while you may not have a lengthy resume, you might be surprised by how much you can truly offer.

Sell yourself.  Think about what your top three strengths are.  You may decide it is determination, attention to detail and drive.  Be sure to communicate your strengths in an interview giving examples in your personal or work experience that shows your strengths.

Don’t be shy to call the organisation after you have applied to confirm they have received your job application. You can ask them what the timeline is for shortlisting, and it shows real enthusiasm if you call back to ask if you have been a successful applicant.  It’s also a good idea to ask for feedback to about your application.

And most of all, keep trying.  If you don’t get the first job you apply for, keep persisting and the right role will come along.
